Broadband sales set to be clarified

People in broadband sales jobs could be instructed to provide more clarity when selling a service to consumers after Ofcom issued a new code.

The Voluntary Code of Practice on Broadband Speeds, an updated code on the 2008 version, requires providers to commit to giving consumers a more accurate estimate of the speed they are likely to achieve on their line.

In addition, providers will commit to giving consumers the option to leave a contract early without penalty if it is impossible to improve their speed to the level that is advertised.

Research by the regulator found that although the UK's average broadband speed has increased by over 25 per cent in the past year, many consumers are still not achieving the speed they have been sold.

Ed Richards, Ofcom chief executive commented: "Actual speeds are often much lower than many of the advertised speeds which makes it essential that consumers are given information which is as accurate as possible at the point of sale; this is what the new code is designed to deliver."
