Can you sell fast broadband on copper wires?
People in
sales jobs could find it hard to sell fast broadband to customers while providers use copper wires.
"There is pressure for Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to advertise and deliver faster and faster speeds, yet these are limited by the current infrastructure," said Richard Patterson, spokesperson for broadband-expert.co.uk.
He said that most providers deliver internet through copper wires, used for phones, which means that those living further than 2km from the exchange will get slow speeds.
Mr Patterson welcomed the new voluntary code from Ofcom, which allows customers to get out of their contract if they are not getting the speed they were sold.
ISPs will also be required to advertise realistic speeds.
The government has announced that it will look to achieve a minimum of 2Mbps broadband nationwide by 2015 rather than 2012, as it had previously pledged, citing insufficient funding.
However, Virgin's fibre optic broadband could see homes get speeds of up to 50Mbps when it trials a service through existing electricity lines in the Welsh village of Crumlin in Caerphilly.
