200,000 head to work with a hangover, study finds
Those in sales jobs may be among the 200,000 Britons who go to work with a hangover everyday, recent figures have suggested.
People failing to turn up for work and conducting their role at a lower rate of productivity than normal due to alcohol are costing the economy as much as £6.4 billion per year, charity organisation Alcohol Concern highlighted today (February 2nd).
As such, 14 million working days are lost to over-consumption of alcohol, with an estimated ten million people in England drinking above the recommended guidelines everyday.
In response to these findings, Alcohol Concern has written to secretary of state Vince Cable, calling on him to introduce workplace policies on alcohol as part of the Corporate Governance Code.
Chief executive of the charity Eric Appleby believes this would improve not only the health of employees, but boost efficiency and productivity too.
He said: “Companies simply have to address attitudes to alcohol and drinking behaviours - it is costing the economy billions every year.”
Meanwhile, recent figures from the Office for National Statistics showed pay growth weakened to 1.9 per cent during September and November 2011.
